THE FAMILY BIBLE

The Bible appears to have been presented to Ludwig Andreas and Marie Seifloh on the occasion of their marriage, by the Lauchhammer Ironworks where he was employed.

The names of their five children, with dates, godparents and so on are hand-written on the flyleaf. As is noted elsewhere, only two of their children survived into adulthood, Heloise who died at 39, and Max who lived to 81.

The inscriptions on the reverse of the flyleaf then show that the Bible was then given by Marie to Max and Emma when their first child, Max Julius Reinhard, was born in 1901. His (in Max's hand-writing) is the only Seiflow birth that it records. The Bible was then abandoned as a family record, presumably because of little Max's death; the details of all their other children are written in the "Familienchronik".

The Bible itself is a leather-bound quarto volume about 7.5 cm thick and weighing about 3 kg; the title page reads:
