Glossary

The following names of occupations or professions appear in the Archives, but exact equivalents are not always easy to find, and some of the definitions below are only my best guesses:

• Bau-Inspektor - building inspector?
• Bildnismaler - portrait-painter
• Brunnen-Bauer - well engineer or builder
• Fabr. Kom. Rat. - "Fabr." is probably the abbreviation for "Fabrikant", manufacturer or industrialist;  "Kom. Rat." suggests "Kommerzienrat", "a title conferred on distinguished financiers or men of business." (Cassell's Dictionary)
• Ingenieur - engineer
• Kasern-Inspektor - literally "barracks inspector", but not mentioned in my dictiuonaries;  perhaps akin to "police-inspector"?
• Kaufmann - merchant or businessman
• Kunstmeister - waterworks surveyor or engineer
• Masch. Fabrik. - presumably "Maschinenfabrikant", machine manufacturer
• Maschinenbau-Inspektor - "Maschinenbauer" is a mechanical engineer
• Maschinen-Meister - a senior mechanical engineer?
• Pumpen-Bauer - pump engineer or builder
• Rittmeister - cavalry Captain
• Schriftsteller - writer, author
• Unteroffizier - non-commissioned-officer, NCO
